What are the wiring regulations?
The IET Wiring Regulations, also known as BS 7671, is the standard for electrical installations in the UK. They cover the design, installation, inspection, and testing of electrical systems to ensure safety and proper functioning in domestic, commercial, and industrial settings. The standard is regularly updated to reflect advancements in technology and changes in safety practices, with the Eighteenth Edition being the most current version, including the Amendment 2:2022 update.
What is the History of the Wiring Regulations?
The Wiring Regulations were first published as the ‘Rules and Regulations for the Prevention of Fire Risks Arising from Electric Lighting’ by the Society of Telegraph Engineers and Electricians in 1882 in order to improve the safety
of the rapidly expanding networks of electrical lighting.
There have been 18 editions released, each bringing further improvements and refinements to standardise electrical circuit installations. The release of the 15th edition in 1981 aligned the rules with the corresponding international standard IEC 60364, with the 16th edition in 1992 being formally adopted as BS 7671 to ensure the design standards became legally enforceable.
The current version, the 18th Edition, was issued in 2018.
What has Changed in the 18th Edition?
The 18th Edition has been issued 4 times. The major changes include:
2018 version (issued with blue cover): Energy efficiency performance levels were established and introduced the use of surge protection devices and arc fault detection devices.
Amendment 1, February 2020: Updated requirements related to car charging.
Amendment 2, March 2022 (issued with brown cover).
Amendment 3, July 2024: Clarified bi-directional vs uni-directional protective devices.
A more detailed overview of changes is available on the IET website.
